6:00 pm – “Regulation of Weight Status, Including Role of Gut Hormones and Food Intake”
Presenter:
Kevin Guerrero, MS, RD
Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will focus on the pathophysiology of altered weight status and the need for behavioral and pharmacological approaches for long-term weight management. How the feeding-fasting cycle affects the release of appetite-regulating hormones will be discussed. The ways in which the gut-brain axis (GBA) relays hunger and satiety cues between the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system, allowing for appropriate metabolic adjustments, will be explored. The various factors that affect the ability of the GBA to communicate with the rest of the body, including physical activity and the microbiome, and how food intake and metabolism are rarely in sync—thus contributing to difficulties with weight management—will be addressed.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Understand the etiology and pathophysiology of altered weight status;
- Explain the mechanisms through which altered weight status impacts appetite regulation;
- Identify key hormones and their contributions to appetite signaling; and
- Discuss the interplay between food intake and other factors (such as physical activity and the microbiome) affecting the physiological response to energy intake.
7:00 pm – “Lifestyle Approach with Emphasis on Behavioral and Nutritional Strategies”

Janet Kolmer Grommet, PhD, RDN, CDCES, FAND
Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will focus on the various causes of overweight/obesity, including factors within and outside the individual’s control. Identifying problems from the client/patient’s perspective that contribute to weight issues will be addressed, while interventions focusing on lifestyle changes, including physical activity and nutrition, will be identified. The role of health professionals as facilitators of lifestyle changes to improve weight status will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Collaborate with the client/patient in identifying problems contributing to weight status;
- Support the client/patient in implementing behavioral strategies, such as stimulus control and self-monitoring, with an emphasis on goal setting; and
- Guide the client/patient in incorporating evidence-based nutrition concepts, such as meal plans and macronutrient distribution.
8:00 pm – “Mechanism or Action of Recent Pharmaceutical Interventions to Possibly Complement Nutritional Interventions for Weight Management”

Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will focus on how GLP-1 receptor agonists, which were initially designed to treat type 2 diabetes, can mitigate metabolic syndrome and help with weight management. The mechanism of action of GLP-1 agonists and their role in obesity prevention, along with recommendations for multi-component treatments, including diet and exercise, will be discussed. Concerns over gastrointestinal side effects and other issues, such as cost, will be explored.

- Identify mechanism of action of GLP-1 receptor agonists, specifically semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy), liraglutide (Saxenda) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro), in weight management;
- Address challenges and safety concerns associated with GLP-1 receptor agonists; and
- Discuss multi-component treatment strategies for obesity management with diet and lifestyle as the cornerstone of pharmaceutical interventions such as GLP-1 receptor agonists.
